AWFL Basic Rules Index

1.
Each team will consist of a 26 man roster and 1 Head Coach.  Each team GM will have a $300 AWFL Salary Cap.
2.
Every week, 8 of your players, 3 of your defenses, and your head coach will score points for you.  The rest of your team serves as substitutes in case of injury or minimum position qualifications are not met.
3.
Scoring is based on charts found in the offense and defense rules sections.  The minimum score for a quarter is 0.
4.
Unlike rotisserie leagues, this is a head to head competition.  The object of this game is not to accumulate the highest statistics at the end of the year in each category, but to instead win your game weekly against another owner's team, with the ultimate goal of advancing to the AWFL Playoffs and winning the AWFL Bowl.
5.
Lineups must be submitted by email the day before games begin for that week. This is Saturday for most weeks, Friday when there are games on Saturday, and Wednesday when there are Thursday games.  Lineups are to be submitted to awfl-lineups@subvert.net
6.
You should attempt to have a well balanced roster, and keep in mind that this is a multi-year league, so trading for the future is not only allowed, but encouraged.  In addition, keep in mind that 'BYE' weeks can hurt your team if you do not have depth as zeros are zeroes.
7.
Position eligibility is restricted to positions listed on USA Today's rosters, which you can access from the links section of the web site.  Coaches must be current NFL Head Coaches.  A team my fire its Coach only ONCE per season.  A team may only fire their Head Coach if their record is .500 or lower.
8.
Each team is allowed a 4 player taxi squad as a reserve.  Any player may be assigned to a team's taxi squad, but must first clear league waivers first.  The salaries of players on a taxi squad are NOTcounted towards the salary cap and Head Coaches may NOT be placed on the taxi squad.
9.
Each team is allowed a development squad of up to 9 players.  There are still only 3 rounds each season to the college draft, but an owner may sign rookies as free agents and put them on the development squad.  Any player in his 1st, 2nd, or 3rd season may be assigned to the development squad.  Draft choices are automatically assigned to the development squad from the draft.  Players who are signed as free agents must clear waivers once, just as they would to be assigned to the taxi squad, before being assigned to the development squad.  Once they have cleared these waivers, the development squad rules will apply to the player.

A development squad player is limited to appearing in 5 games per season. After that, he is no longer *ever* eligible to be placed on a development squad again.  Even if the player is released and signed by another team while he is still less than 3 years experience, the new team will be unable to assign him to their development squad.  The number of games a development squad player has played will be tracked on the rosters in parenthesis next to their name.  If a development squad player is on an active roster, but does not play that week in *your* game, not the NFL game, it does not count as a game played.  He must appear in your game, and be scored, for it to count towards one of the 5 games per year he can play.

Finally, a new salary scale has been implemented for players on the development squad and is defined below.  The salary of players on the development squad will not be charged to the salary cap.  If a player is promoted from the development squad, the salary will be included in the cap.  If a player is demoted to the development squad, the salary will be subtracted from the cap.  This is similar to the way salaries are handled for players on the taxi squad.  All development squad players who reach their 4th year of service are no longer eligible for the development squad *and* their contract increases by $5 as a normal player's contract does.

10.
Any seriously injured player may be placed on an injured reserve list without exposing the player to a waiver claim.  The player will remain on the injured reserve list for the rest of the season.  The Commissioner may veto any placement of a player on the injured reserve list if the player is not deemed to be 'seriously injured'.  The salary of a player on the injured reserve list will not count towards a team's salary cap.  Seriously injured is loosely defined as an injury which will require the player to miss more than 2-3 games or miss the rest of the season.  There's no hard and fast rule here.  NFL teams screw around with injury lists and injuries. We don't.  So long as we're only doing this with injured players, the Commissioner shouldn't have to intervene.  When in doubt, ask the Commissioner whether a player is eligible.
11.
A team may take any player they protect and designate him as that team's franchise player and that player will earn $35.  This represents the team's ability to 'renegotiate' with a high proceed veteran you want to keep.  The franchise player may not be removed from the roster or salary cap with the exception of being placed on the injured reserve list.  The franchise player's salary will be renewed annually at $35 rather than increased by $5.  Any franchise player who is not renewed automatically may not be protected and becomes a free agent and may not be retaiened for a $5 increase in salary.
12.
Each team has a $300 salary cap.  At ALL times during the season, the salaries of the 26 active players on a team's roster, the salary of the Head Coach, and the amount of money spent on Home Field Advantage must total no more than $300.  Any transaction made that would result in a violation of this salary cap will be ruled null and void by the league office.  The salary cap is only in effect, however, during the season and playoffs. Offseason trades can mush a team over the salary cap so long as the overall salary is brought below the cap by the beginning of the season.
13.
A team may, prior to the first game of the season, allocate $0 - $40 towards a Home Field Advantage.  For every $5 spent on HFA, you will have 1 Point added to your team's score in the 4th Quarter during every home game.  Teams that do not specify what they want their Home Field Advantage to be by the deadline listed during the offseason will have the rest of their salary cap applied to the purchase of the largest HFA possible.
14.
Players placed on the taxi squad by a team must first clear league waivers before joining the squad.  Waiver claims are awarded on a weekly basis, in inverse order of standings.  Claims are to be made by email to awfl-transactions@subvert.net.  Players claimed on waivers must first fit under a team's salary cap for the claim to be valid.  Players claimed on waivers MUST be kept on the claiming team's active roster until the end of the following year's free agent auction and may not be traded, released, placed on the injured reserve list, placed on the development squad, placed on the taxi squad, or killed, or anything else :).  The player's salary will remain unchanged.
15.
To prevent a team from being burned by having a Running Back get injured on his first carry, a Quarterback on his first pass thrown, etc, AWFL has established minimums that a player must meet in order to be considered qualified to be scored.  If your starter does not meet these qualification standards, your first backup listed is checked to see if they meet them.  If your first backup listed does not qualify, then your second backup is checked, and so forth through your entire backup list.  The first player to meet the qualification standards is who will be scored with one singular exception.  If your starter does not meet the qualification standards but outscored the backup who did qualify, then your starter's score will be used.

Players may be retained indefinately, subject to the following terms.  A player's salary increases by $5 each year he is protected.  Thus if you have Marshall Faulk on your team earning $30, and choose to keep him for next year, his salary will be $35.  Players who are on the Development Squad follow the salary scheme listed previously.  A Head Coach's salary increases by $2 each year that he is protected. A team may protect no more than 15 of it's non-Development Squad players, plus their coach for a total of 16.  Defenses are counted as players in regards to salary and roster slots.  After all, Kickers and Punters think they're players too. :)
17.
Free Agents are signed through a sealed bidding process.  A team may bid as much by email on a free agent as they can fit under their $300 salary cap.  If they want to bid more than they have room for, they must indicate who they are removing from their roster to make room if they get the free agent in the same email as they submit their bid in.  In case of ties, the lowest team in the standings that bid will get the player.  Bids must be received by the League Office by Fridays.  The transactions are to be submitted to awfl-transactions@subvert.net.  Players released by an AWFL team become free agents and are eligible to be picked up the next week through the sealed bid process.
18.
Each team has a transaction budget of 40.  These points may be traded to other teams.  Up to 40 transaction points may be carried over into next season's budget, so a team may have as many as 80 points to spend.  Teams may not trade next year's points prior to the season.

19.
Before the season begins, after the teams have submitted their list of 15 protected players, all remaining players from their roster along with all non-rookie players will be available in a series of Free Agent auctions.  Bids will be submitted by email for each round and the owner with the highest bid on a player will sign that player.  In the event of a tie, the player will sign with the team with the worse record from the previous year.
20.
In the event of a league expansion, prior to the Free Agent Draft, each existing team will protect 10 players rather than 15 and each expansion team will select one player from each team.  Once the expansion teams have selected their players, the existing teams will protect 5 more players and the Free Agent auction will resume as normal.
21.
Prior to every season, there will be a college draft, consisting of 3 rounds, in inverse order of finish and final playoff standings.  AWFL Bowl Champion picks last with the Runner-Up picking next to last.  The rest of the league will pick in reverse order based on their Win-Loss record.  Any player drafted  in the NFL draft may be taken.  These picks may also be traded.  All players taken in the draft are in addition to the 15 players you may protect annually.  Expansion treams will receive draft picks before playoff teams, but after those teams which did not make the playoffs.
22.
*ALL* College Draft Players are automatically placed on the Development Squad.  A team *must* activate them as part of their weekly transactions if they wish them to be able to be placed in a lineup.
23.
During the season, players may *NOT* be put in lineups unless they are actually on the active roster.  This applies to both Taxi and Development Squad Players.  If they are not activated by the Transaction Deadline for that week, they can not be listed in the lineup submitted for that week. Period -- no exceptions. Make a Note.
24.
In the event a team fails submit a lineup, that team will be scored using the offense scheme most recently submitted and a 3-4 Read defense scheme
25.
Here is the order in which a tie breaker is determined for the playoffs among teams with the same overall record.  If there are more than 2 teams in the tie, head to head is tossed out.
1. Head-to-Head Results
2. Division Record
3. Conference Record
4. Scoring Differential
5. Points For
6. Points Allowed
7. Coach's Win-Loss Record
8. League Coin Toss
